Gergely Salát is a sinologist and expert in East Asian affairs. After graduating from Beijing No. 55 High School, he pursued Chinese studies at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), where he earned his degree in 2001. He completed his PhD in 2006 with a dissertation on Chinese legal history and received his habilitation in 2012. He began teaching in 1997 at the College of Foreign Trade and has been a faculty member at ELTE’s Department of Chinese Studies since 1998.
Since 2013, Dr. Salát has served as a full-time lecturer at Pázmány Péter Catholic University’s Faculty of Humanities, where he has been associate professor and head of the Department of Chinese Studies since 2014. He also leads the university’s Modern East Asia Research Group and served as head of the Institute of International and Political Science from 2018 to 2021.
A member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Oriental Studies since 2014, he has held leadership roles including secretary (2017), vice-chair (2020), and chair (2023). Since 2020, he has worked at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (MKI). His research focuses on contemporary Chinese domestic and foreign policy, as well as international relations in East Asia.
