Boris Kálnoky is a journalist and writer with a distinguished international career spanning several decades. Born in Germany in 1961 to a Székler father and a Silesian mother, he spent his formative years moving frequently, living in six different cities across Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, and France. He completed his schooling in Paris and studied political science in Hamburg, graduating in 1986. Kálnoky began his journalistic career at the German daily Die Welt, where he joined the editorial staff shortly after university. The political transformations of 1989 inspired him to turn his focus to Central and Eastern Europe, drawing on his Hungarian heritage. In 1993, he moved to Budapest to work as a freelance journalist. After nine months, he rejoined Die Welt as a correspondent.
In 2004, he was appointed Die Welt's correspondent for Turkey and the Middle East, based in Istanbul, a position he held until 2013. He returned to freelancing in 2015, this time based in Hungary, though he continues to collaborate with Die Welt and contributes regularly to Austrian and Swiss publications. Kálnoky is passionate about the written word and is dedicated to sharing this passion with his students, viewing writing not just as a profession but as a vital element of life.
