The Khamoro Budapest Band, founded in 2007 under the leadership of Zsolt Farkas, is a Roma folklore ensemble that performs authentic Gypsy folk music. Named “Khamoro,” meaning Sun or Sunbeam, the band embodies the vitality of Roma culture through virtuosic instrumentation, vocal bass, and vibrant rhythms. Drawing from the living musical traditions of Nagyecsed and melodies from Transdanubia, Transylvania, Serbia, and Russia, their unique style is enriched by original lyrics in Romani and Hungarian, exploring themes of Roma hardships, joy, and humor, accompanied by guitar, mandolin, violin, cimbalom, double bass, and percussion. Zsolt Farkas, raised in a family of musicians and dancers, is dedicated to preserving and sharing Roma music and dance. As a musician, dancer, choreographer, and leader of the Khamoro Dance Theatre, he has produced acclaimed works like The Train Dance Drama – O Zibano and World of Colors – Színek világa. Farkas also teaches at national and local táncház events, educational institutions, and camps, fostering appreciation for Roma traditions among children and adults alike. The band’s third album, released internationally by ARC Music UK in 2017, reached the Top 10 in the World Music category in 2018. Beyond performing, Farkas mentors at the Reformed Roma Collegium, lectures at Roma Colleges, and curates cultural programs for the Lorca Foundation in underserved Hungarian communities. His mission is to elevate Roma culture, ensuring its dignity and value are recognized in Hungarian and global cultural spaces.
