Across the West, liberal democracies are being shaken by rising polarization, cultural upheaval, and widespread distrust in political institutions. The post-Cold War consensus, built on technocratic governance, open borders, and elite-led progress, fractured under pressure from populist movements, identity politics, and deepening divisions over national culture and sovereignty. In this timely and high-stakes debate, two leading thinkers will examine the roots of today’s democratic discontent. Has the liberal democratic model reached its limits? What role did political and cultural elites play in alienating large segments of the population? Can democracy survive when core values such as nationhood, tradition, and freedom of speech are increasingly contested? The panel discussion is powered by the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs.
