János Veres graduated as an agricultural engineer from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Debrecen in 1981. In 1986, he obtained a degree in economics with a specialization in engineering and earned a university doctorate from the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences.

He was a member of the Hungarian Parliament from 1994 to 2014, served as mayor of Nyírbátor from 2002 to 2003, political state secretary from 2003 to 2005, and Minister of Finance from 2005 to 2009.

He also served as a municipal representative of Nyírbátor from 1990 to 1994 and again from 2014 to 2018, and as a member of the General Assembly of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County from 1998 to 2002 and from 2014 onward.

Currently, he is the managing director of his own company, honorary consul of the Republic of Moldova based in Nyírbátor, and serves as a supervisory board member and international advisor.
